Day 12 – Your “Monkey Mind” & A Meditation

Jon talks with Mind-Body Master Dr. Rick Scott about the concept of the “Monkey Mind” and how conditioned, negative patterns of thought can often dominate our awareness.

After watching this video, please also watch (or listen to) Dr. Scott’s “Grand Central Station” meditation (below), a powerful technique for building your “non-reactivity” muscles. Find a time (preferably today) to do the meditation. See if you can incorporate this meditation into each day going forward.

The concept of the “Monkey-Mind” is reviewed; topics include:

  • The concept of the “Monkey-Mind” & how negative patterns of thought tend to dominate our minds

  • How negative patterns of thought and emotion are “conditioned” in the past

  • How we become and live-out our thoughts, but how we can change our thoughts and ourselves

  • A meditation to help us build our “non-reactivity” muscles

Journaling Assignment

Negative Writing (on a piece of paper you will rip up and throw away afterwards): Take 5 minutes to write down all of the negative thoughts causing you anxiety right now, and when you are done, rip up the piece of paper.

Questions for Journaling:

  • What are the most negative beliefs you have about yourself?

  • To what extent have you become your negative beliefs?

  • Did you do today’s meditation and what was your experience?

  • On a 1-10 scale (10 being worst) how would you rate your pain today?
